Fees & Rebates
Consultation fees vary with the type of service that is provided. In some cases, the fees can be adjusted to take into account some aspects of a client’s financial circumstances (e.g., pensioner or veteran).
Psychological services are now covered under MedicarePlus for a maximum of five sessions per year. MedicarePlus will provide some financial rebate for psychological health services which complement the General Practitioner’s care in relation to some chronic illnesses.
More recently, the Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative has enabled those who suffer from many psychological disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression, addictions) to access the services of a psychologist. Under this scheme, a Mental Health Care Plan is prepared by the General Practitioner and then a referral is made to a psychologist. A Medicare rebate is the available for up to ten individual allied mental health services in a calendar year.
Others who might be eligible for government support are victims of crime, those injured in the workplace/traffic accident and veterans through the relevant services.
Private Health Insurance
Funds often include a rebate for psychological services. As the availability and type of rebate varies across the different funds and the type of cover that you have purchased, you would need to contact your particular health care fund to determine your eligibility for a rebate.
